Antique German Pastel Portrait of a Gentleman, Mid 19th Century Framed Biedermeier Male Portrait

£345

Antique German pastel portrait of a gentleman, dating to the mid-19th century.
The work is executed in pastel on paper laid on board and shows a seated gentleman in dark formal clothing, with restrained modelling of the face and a muted atmospheric background. It is a well-preserved example of 19th-century German portraiture, presented under glass in its period wooden frame with gilt detailing.
The sitter is identified on the reverse by a handwritten inscription as Aloysius Kunsch, born 11 August 1813 and died 1879. This inscription provides useful historical and family provenance, but the main interest of the work is as an authentic antique German gentleman’s portrait.
The portrait is initialled “O.K.” in the lower right corner. The artist has not been identified.
