Takashi Murakami – "JAPONISME → Cognitive Revolution: Learning from Hiroshige" – Original Museum Exhibition Poster
This huge exhibition poster was produced in 2025 for Takashi Murakami’s 2024–2025 project reimagining Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo. The featured image, Suido Bridge and Surugadai, is Murakami’s vibrant tribute to the classical woodblock print, filtered through his contemporary lens.
The scene captures a historic samurai neighborhood in Edo (now Tokyo) during Boy’s Festival—celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month. The eye-catching carp streamers, modeled after ancient military banners, symbolize courage and determination. Inspired by a Chinese legend about a carp transforming into a dragon by leaping a waterfall, the imagery expresses aspirations for strength and success in childhood—perfectly aligning with Murakami’s fusion of tradition and pop culture.
